USA | Idag ser ingen demokrat ut att kunna utmana Clinton om hon verkligen vill bli demokraternas presidentkandidat.

Time March 23 2015

David Von Drehle skriver i Time:

As a rule, these are words no politician wants to be speaking in the days leading up to the launch of a major campaign:

“What I did was to direct, you know, my counsel to conduct a thorough investigation …”

“I fully complied with every rule that I was governed by.”

“They were personal and private, about matters that I believed were in the scope of my personal privacy.”

As a rule, a candidate wants to take flight on outstretched wings of hope, not scramble in the dirt on the crabbed limbs of legal compliance. Every day spent saying “Trust me, my lawyer’s O.K. with it” is a bad day – and worse if she appears to be reading from lawyer-vetted notes.

As a rule, these would be dire, perhaps fatal, markers of a campaign crashing on takeoff. But in this case the politician was Hillary Clinton, whose carefully laid plans to unveil her latest presidential bid hit turbulence on March 10 as she fumbled her way through an awkward press conference in a corridor at the U.N. At issue: Clinton’s decision to ignore White House guidance as Secretary of State and instead conduct government business through a private email account hosted on her family’s personal server.

Along with her husband – the 42nd President of the United States – Hillary Clinton is the co-creator of a soap-operatic political universe in witch documents vanish, words like is take on multiple meanings and foes almost always overplay their hand. Impeachment can be a route to higher approval ratings; the occasional (and rare) defeat merely marks the start of the next campaign. Whatever rules may apply to them, the law of gravity is not one.

What doesn’t kill Team Clinton only makes it stronger. Will that be the lesson again? Hillary Clinton has a vast lead over any potential challenger for the Democratic nomination, and 86% of Democrats are ready to support her, according to a recent NBC/Wall Street Journal poll. Though her poor handling of the email issue has left party insiders unsure whether she learned anything from her slow-footed and wooden 2008 campaign, insiders don’t control elections. Voters do.

The veteran New York political consultant Hank Sheinkopf, a former adviser to Bill Clinton, is unsure. “These stories will reach critical mass and coverage as she gets closer to any announcement date,” says Sheinkopf, “and they will damage her because they offer a portrayal of someone who plays fast and loose with rules.” But Clinton stories have reached critical mass so many times before. And still, to borrow from Maya Angelou, they rise.

Why does it seem that men screw up more than women?

While women are certainly in substantial positions of power, that number is still lower compared to men, so I think that probably has something to do with it. I have more high-profile men involved in cases concerning allegations of sex … Women are more inclined to weigh consequences. Women are smarter about it.  Over the years, beginning with Gary Hart, we have seen politicians get into trouble in this area and we have seen the ‘stand by your man’ wife go away over time.

The former Massachusetts governor convincingly won all three primary contests on Tuesday with 98 delegates at stake — Wisconsin, Maryland and Washington, D.C.

But instead of acknowledging his GOP rivals — as he has always done on previous primary nights — Romney focused his 13-minute address on declaring President Barack Obama an out-of-touch elitist as he sought to frame the general election around his economic message.

Romney’s rhetoric sought to paint Obama as an aloof excuse maker who is dodging responsibility for gas prices and a sour economy. The president, Romney said, has an overinflated sense of his own success based on being cocooned in a bubble of admirers.

“It’s enough to make you think that years of flying around on Air Force One, surrounded by an adoring staff of true believers telling you what a great job you are doing, well, that might be enough to make you a little out of touch,” Romney said.

Och president Obama verkar ha anammat exakt samma strategi. Carrie Budoff Brown rapporterar:

President Barack Obama jumped fully into the 2012 race Tuesday, naming his likely Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, for the first time in an official presidential speech that accused the Republican establishment of embracing polices that threaten the middle class and economic fairness.

In an election-year appeal to middle-class voters, Obama shredded the spending plan written by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, backed by Romney and supported by the House Republican caucus as a “Trojan horse” built around radical right-wing and “thinly veiled social Darwinism.”

“Instead of moderating their views even slightly, the Republicans running Congress right now have doubled down,” Obama said at The Associated Press luncheon. “They’re proposed a budget so far to the right that it makes the Contract With America look like the New Deal.”

USA | ”Live to fight another day.”

Alexander Burns, Politico, skriver:

General-election viability has been a part of Santorum’s message since before the Iowa caucuses. Even when he was polling in the middle of the pack in Iowa, Santorum was urging Republicans there to think about which candidate in the race had a record of winning the blue-collar, Midwestern swing voters who decide elections.

Now, strategists suggest, is the time for Santorum to dial up that argument. The cornerstones of Romney’s campaign have always been his perceived electability and strength on the economy. With unemployment numbers dropping and Romney looking less formidable in polling match-ups with the president, Santorum has an opportunity to ask the GOP to reconsider their assumptions about the front-runner.

He’s started doing that, telling voters in Missouri last week that their party needed to nominate a candidate “much more multidimensional than Mitt Romney” to beat President Barack Obama. In his victory speech Tuesday night, Santorum said that it was his reliable conservatism, rather than Romney’s money and organization, that would give the president his toughest challenge.

Santorum will need to make that case at full blast if he’s going to persuade voters to view 2012 through an entirely different lens than the one they’ve been using. In a way, that’s been the story of his whole campaign — a White House run held back principally by the fact that it seems so implausible.

The women complained of sexually suggestive behavior by Cain that made them angry and uncomfortable, the sources said, and they signed agreements with the restaurant group that gave them financial payouts to leave the association. The agreements also included language that bars the women from talking about their departures.

I’ve known Herman Cain for about 7 years. I was one of several consultants on his Senate race in 2004 and was proud to help him. I’d never heard any of these allegations until I read them in Politico, nor does anything I read in the press change my opinion that Herman is an upstanding man and a gentleman. I have great respect for Herman and his character and I would never speak ill of him, on the record or off the record. That’s true today and it’s not going to change.

”This occurred at a restaurant in Crystal City (Virginia), and everybody was aware of it,” Wilson said on the station. ”It was only a matter of time because so many people were aware of what took place, so many people were aware of her situation, the fact she left — everybody knew with the campaign that this would eventually come up.”

Wilson declined to say specifically what Cain said or did to the woman, but that the CEO’s actions made other individuals at the table uneasy.

”It was very uncomfortable,” said the pollster, recalling that other individuals present asked Cain to stop.

Wilson said there were at least three other people at the gathering but wouldn’t share the name of the woman for publication.

I juni kom dessutom den två timmar långa dokumentärfilmen ”The Undefeated”.

Though the timing of Palin’s announcement was a surprise, GOP operatives have long expected her to pass on a 2012 race. She did not build an infrastructure that could have been used as the foundation for a campaign, her political action committee did little to build a staff and she remained on the Fox News payroll as a contributor while 2012 candidates Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich saw their contracts terminated.

[T]he most important piece of Paul’s Iowa operation was outreach to the social conservatives who play such a critical role in the state’s Republican electorate.

“The missing link for us, the outreach to evangelicals, which is so key to South Carolina and the south — we’re filling it,” said [senior Paul strategist Doug] Wead […]

Paul’s campaign, he said, is usually “identified with the cause of liberty…[but] there is something that precedes liberty and that is life,” he said, launching into a graphic story about watching an abortion while he was doing an OB/GYN rotation in medical school. “The prime reason that government exists in a free society is to protect liberty, but also to protect life. And I mean all life,” Paul said.

Redan tidigt under onsdagen kom ovanstående videosvar.

“Unless things change and Obama can run on accomplishments, he will have to kill Romney,” said a prominent Democratic srategist aligned with the White House.

The onslaught would have two aspects. The first is personal: Obama’s reelection campaign will portray the public Romney as inauthentic, unprincipled and, in a word used repeatedly by Obama’s advisers in about a dozen interviews, “weird.”

The second aspect of the campaign to define Romney is his record as CEO of Bain Capital, a venture capital firm that was responsible for both creating and eliminating jobs. Obama officials intend to frame Romney as the very picture of greed in the great recession — a sort of political Gordon Gekko.

“He was very, very good at making a profit for himself and his partners but not nearly as good [at] saving jobs for communities,” said David Axelrod, the president’s chief strategist.

“People already knew that he’s a political opportunist of the highest order — changing his positions to suit the day’s polling,” said Bill Burton, Obama’s former White House deputy press secretary who now heads Priorities USA, an independent group expected to lead Democratic attacks on the Republican nominee. “But the last couple weeks, this lack of principles has translated into a total lack of leadership on issues like the debt ceiling.”

Svaret från Mitt Romneys kampanjstab kom snabbt. ABC News rapporterade följande:

“It is disgraceful that President Obama’s campaign has launched his re-election with the stated goal to ‘kill’ his opponent with an onslaught of negative and personal attacks,” said Romney campaign manager Matt Rhoades in a written statement.

“President Obama will say and do desperate things to hold onto power because he knows he has failed. Neither despicable threats, nor
President Obama’s billion dollar negative campaign, will put Americans back to work, save their homes, or restore their hopes. On November 6, 2012, this will change,” Rhoades said.

Tensions within presidential campaigns, especially those struggling to find traction, are common. But the ferocity with which Fischer and others attack Weaver and the extent they went to disclose sensitive internal problems is not merely the stuff of a power struggle. It’s illustrative of a campaign that has been thrown together on the run and is comprised of figures who hadn’t even met the candidate before he returned from China this spring, working alongside those who have known him for much of their adult life.

The problem for Huntsman, of course, is that all this high-decibel public squabbling undercuts his main rationale for winning the GOP nomination — that the former Utah governor offers the level-headed competence and executive experience needed to unseat President Barack Obama. Not only that, but voters might wonder how he’d bring civility to public discourse — another Huntsman promise — if he can’t do the same inside the four walls of his campaign headquarters.

Sheryl Gay Stolberg på bloggen The Caucus skriver:

[Huntsman] has worked to cultivate a reputation as “the civility candidate on the campaign trail for his refusal to attack his opponents. But this week, with his poll numbers stuck in the single digits, he has been stepping up his rhetoric, first against the Republican front-runner in many polls, Mitt Romney, and Wednesday against President Obama.

On Tuesday, he said his Republican rivals had shown “very little leadership” in the debt-ceiling fight in Washington, and singled out Mr. Romney for not making his views known until the last minute. The silence was “telling,” Mr. Huntsman said.
